THE MATTER OF RINGS & SPIRALS IN NATURE
AND ITS EVOLUTION OF ILLUSION.
Abstract wood sculpture- Mood board

Collected wood from the garden that had been sawed 5 years ago. Unsure of wood name.
Used the technique of counting wood rings to find out age. Wood is roughly 30 years old.

In photoshop I have painted rings around the wood as a representation of how I will produce the final product. I will use a blow torch to create the black charcoal lines. Sketches also below. Juxtaposition is evident through the man made structure of charcoal rings, against the natural process of rings found in wood.

Final images of torched wood. Happy with the result.

Final images of sculpture. Re-sanded and oiled to complete.
PRODUCTION OF 3 ARTWORKS

Far L- Image: Spiral and rings sketches, showing similarity and as a result both are an illusion.

Final image of artwork. Representing the illusion of rings and spirals and how the imprint of a finger is closely linked with this idea.
Artwork 2. The organic rings were sewed on paper and then placed on a piece of wood, which had originally been sawed from the bottom of the wood sculpture itself. This artwork was intended to demonstrate the organic shapes in tree rings and how they all give off an effect of an illusion through its use of repetitive circular lines.

My last artwork encapsulates an abstract interpretation of distorted rings. I have used red crayon on calico fabric to create the rings and then sewed this material onto white and red striped cotton fabric. I wanted to show a juxtaposition of the round ring motion against a strong horizontal stripe.
